One day I was sitting in my math class, feeling bored and sleepy, when my teacher, Mr. .Ahmed woke me up by his words.He told us his story aboutmath and how his life changed after he changed his way of thinking. He also told us that he used to hate math, but he became good at math after he decided to like it. From that moment, I decided to adopt my teacher`s attitude, and I learned to be open-minded, flexible in my life and positive about math. Mr.Ahmed was a great man; he liked to teach mathfrom his heart. He used to tell us his life story in a way to convince all students to fight negative thoughts and usepositive thoughts instead. Therefore, it taught menot only to change my way of thinking but it also helped me to become open-minded. Because my father never liked math, I assumed that I would not either, so I would never been better than that.In addition Ispent the next few days thinking about the teacher`s story. I was wondering how I could be good at math, and the teacher`s word s were still echoing deeply in my earsâ€Å"My dear kids, open your mind,think in a different waysand imagine yourselves doing what you want to be.† Consequently, I learned to clear my mind, think in a different way and focus on my goals. Another aspect that attracted me more to the teacher’s story was its similarity to my situation. I didn’t like math that time, but my teacher’s words gave me tremendous inspiration I still use that till now. I also became flexible in my life; I could do anything to improve my life without listening to the negative thoughts. I was trying different ways of thinking and listening to the different points of view. As result my family noticed the big change in my life, because prior to that time I waslazy,careless, andunorganized. The next week I felt I was a different person who had a great power to do whatever it took to actualize my plans in life.Not only was my education improved but also my life.Being responsive to change helped me a lot to be successful in most classes and to be friendly with everyone. In addition my brothers appreciated my change and felt like they had their brother back. Finally, my teacher`s story put me on the solid path to walk without failing. My life changed in a positive way from being a lazy student, who hated anything related to math or science, to becoming bright student who enjoyed learning in all aspects. I became very optimistic, confident to face any problems with open heart.In one year my grades changed from D`s to A`s,so my family rewarded me with Safari to Kenya.Since I changed my way of thinking, I changed my life in a remarkable way. My teacher`s advice encouraged me to study human development and psychology.I also decided to study mathematics and to become a math teacher like Mr. Ahmed .Time passed so quickly that I couldn’t believe that I was standing in frontof my own math classteaching.In The first class I couldn’t hide my tears because I remembered my great instructor. My students noticed this, and I told them my story with Mr. Ahmed. I was astonished and unable to understand how his words were powerful for me,completely altering the course of my life. I was writing to my teacher for years telling him every detail of my life; he was a good supporter to me. Additionally, he was very happy to see me successful in my life .When I heard his death , I was feeling sad for months .However , remembering his words â€Å" man will die but his actions and words stay for good† kept me breathing till now. My teacher`s words taught me to appreciate life, and think positively, be open-minded, and be flexible in life. Although he is gone and I am sad for loss of his physical presence, I keep him and his advices in my heart. Therefore, I will keep him as symbol of my success and happiness.

A Visual Interpretation of Lautrec’s “At the Moulin Rogue”

The painting â€Å"At the Moulin Rouge† by Lautrec gives me a feeling of gaudiness and activity as I look at it.   It shows the diverse kinds of activities done in the Moulin Rogue; however, it seems to lack the glamour and fanciness of a typical night club.Even the faces of the women, who I assume are hospitality girls, as is normal in a nightclub, lack luster, instead they are painted using pale colors; the blue hints on the face of the woman on the right even leads me to think that the woman is sickly.Noticeable also are the expressions in the faces of the people.   As opposed to the excitement that would be expected in the faces of people who go our partying in the evening, the faces in the painting seem to show a certain level of dissatisfaction, misery, or boredom.   Even the smile of the woman on the right side seems to be forced.The dominance of earth colors and faded hues in the painting give the viewer a feeling of tiredness and gloom.   The colors seem to ma ke the painting drab instead of what it is supposed to be as a painting of a club where people frequent in the evenings for drinks.   These are not the kinds of colors that one would normally see in a night club – even so, if it is set during an early period where people would most likely be more flamboyant as compared to party-goers of today.There is also a lack of light in the painting; despite the consideration that this is a night club and it opens in the evenings, it is strange that the light sources in the painting seem to be diffused or faded.   The colors and the lighting in the painting give me an overall feeling of monotony and blandness, like when you taste a piece of cake and it is not as sweet as expected despite the visual appearance of the cake.If I was to take notice of composition in the painting, the elements are quite scattered, perhaps to give the viewer a feeling of activity.   However, there are certain portions of the painting where sight is drawn towards, like the central portion which shows a group of people gathered around a table and looking down on the table, probably at cards (for gambling), and the lady at the right side of the painting.These elements of the composition that grab my sight were probably put there to emphasize what these elements denote.As mentioned earlier, the feeling that I get when I see the face of the lady is one of illness and a forced sense of joy, so the painter must have wanted the viewer to feel these emotions which is why he emphasized the element in the first place by putting it in a composition hotspot.   The central table also has the same effect of drawing the viewer towards that area of the painting, which shows, as well the pale faces of the people and the pensive moods that they are in.There is a dominance of curved lines in the picture as clearly shown by the backrest of the chair, the borders of the dresses of the ladies, and the outlines of the glasses and the bottles; this parti cular dominance of curved lines gives the painting a sluggish feel.As would normally be done, curved lines are usually used to invoke grace and softness, but in the painting these lines, in combination with the other elements somehow convey the feeling of lethargy to the viewer – that although there is activity in the Moulin Rogue, the people participating in the activity seem to be tired of what they are doing, or perhaps tired of something else which is why they waste their time in a pub.It also gives me the feeling that the people in the painting have been doing what they are supposedly doing in the painting for many, many times, repeatedly, and have grown exhausted of it.In terms of contrast, the painting is apparently, intentionally blurry and grainy, again making the viewer strain hard enough when looking into the painting.This gives me an added feeling of tiredness around the eyes, effectively conveying the physical equivalent of the abstract emotions that the painting would like to convey.   The different textures in the painting again, give me a feeling of activity, the movements, and the brushstrokes all show the repletion of activity in the painting.   So, although I feel that the painting   is about activity in the pub, it sends out a different message.A detail to note in the painting is the sporadic clean and sharp lines on the gentlemen’s top hats.   This sets the men apart from the women, giving the viewer a sense of aggressiveness when viewing the men in the painting in particular; however, even with this particular feature, notice again that the rims of these top hats are down turned, again giving the viewer the same feeling of tiredness from the painting.The piece, is also, in a way imbalanced, drawing the viewers sight to the right side and the center areas of the painting in particular; but perhaps the artist intended this to be to give the viewer a feeling of drowsiness or disorder; the feeling that one would get from intoxication, which also, by the way, is achieved by the bluntness in contrast, the graininess, and the noise in the painting.Overall, the elements of color, lines, balance, contrast, and texture in the painting contribute to its general feel.   Art is always intentional and the emotions that it convey to a viewer are quite likely, the same emotions that the artist wanted to convey in the first place.Strictly speaking though, a painting of a night club or a pub would contain a diversity of bright psychedelic colors if the norm was to be followed.   However, because perhaps the painter wanted to convey a sense of irony in the painting, the artist succeeded in using the elements of art to achieve this effect.

â€Å"Fear? What should a man fear? It’s all chance, chance rules our lives. Not a man on earth can see a day ahead, groping through the dark. Better to live at random, best we can.† (lines 1068-1072) The themes of fate and light and darkness are prominent in Oedipus Rex, a play written in ancient Greece by the famous poet Sophocles. Oedipus was a powerful Greek king and was notable for his compassion, sense of justice and his swiftness of thought and action. Unfortunately for him, his life fell ill when the prophecy of his birth came true. Throughout the play, the audience experiences a series of emotions. They experience pity, fear, and anger. At the end of the play, the audience may or may not experience a katharsis, a cleansing or purgation of emotions. The dispute between whether Oedipus should be viewed as a victim or merely a part of the gods manifesting their power and thereby teaching man a lesson is a common argument still in literature today. As many members of an audience believe, Oedipus can appear as having been victimized by the prophecy stricken upon him at birth. Oedipus, being born into such a horrible predicament, had no choice but to live his life as he did always afraid of the horrible outcome of his fate. His parents Laius and Jocasta chose to selfishly bind there son’s feet together and abandon him as a way of making sure they would never see him again and never be vulnerable to the day that Oedipus’ prophecy would come true. Therefore, the emotion of pity arises in the audience and Oedipus is viewed as a victim of a very tragic fate. However, it is important to consider whether he inflicted more agony into his life by trying to fight against his fate. Were the gods punishing Oedipus and ultimately all of mankind because of his retaliation? If so, not only was Oedipus punished, but also his parents were for interfering with the gods’ plans. Oedipus suffered the consequence of losing his sight and his mother committed suicide because of her shame and embarrassment. Today, some view the idea of fate as something planned by a greater being and for human beings, out of our control. For Oedipus and his parents, they thought that they could change their fate but as an outcome and consequence for disrespecting the gods, there was no way to escape it. As Oedipus eagerly attempted to uncover the truth about his fate, acting decisively and deliberately refusing to shield himself from the truth. Although we see Oedipus as a playing-piece of fate, the irony becomes so magnified that it seems as if Oedipus was willingly bringing catastrophe upon himself. In one of Oedipus’ speeches, he declares that when he discovers the truth he will excommunicate the murderer from Thebes and punish him severely. Ironically, Oedipus is the murderer himself that he spoke so viciously about and he leaves Thebes and blinds himself after he finds that Jocasta has hanged herself. Despite the many character flaws that Oedipus withholds, such as quickness to anger, stubbornness, ignorance and arrogance, rather than viewing his fate as a natural result of the virtues and vices of his character, Oedipus teaches mankind a lesson in humility. Like many tragedies, Oedipus Rex teaches a lesson of morality to the audience. It teaches the audience that it is better to be humble and that even if you are a good leader, it does not necessarily mean that you are a good person. Oedipus Rex also teaches that no matter your past or what you do to change your fate, it will always catch up to you somehow. â€Å"People of Thebes, my countrymen, look on Oedipus. He solved the famous riddle with his brilliance, he rose to power, a man beyond all power. Who could behold his greatness without envy? Now what a black sea of terror has overwhelmed him. Now as we keep our watch and wait the final day, count no man happy till he dies, free of pain at last.† (lines 1678-1684) These words, spoken by the chorus, form the ending of Oedipus Rex. The chorus announces that even though Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx, he was never happy with his life and his fate and he caused his own fall. Rather than a victim to his fate, he was the antagonist to his fate.
